01From the trail to the drive home
Stretch hiking trousers, cargo trousers with five and six pockets, convertible zip-off pairs, fleece-lined winter trousers, joggers, and shorts from a four-inch running cut to an eighteen-inch walking length.

The inseam is the first decision and it is the one a photograph will not make for you. The short end of this shelf is running and training: four, five and seven inches, quick-dry, usually with a zip pocket at the back for a key. Seven to nine is the hiking length most people settle on. Fourteen and eighteen are walking shorts that reach the knee and read as trousers on a hot street. On the long side, the hiking trousers are the stretch nylon ones: light, water-resistant, quick to dry, and the convertible pairs unzip at the knee when the morning turns into an afternoon. Cargo trousers add the thigh pockets, which is where a phone can live without slapping your leg at every step. The fleece-lined pairs are for a cold walk rather than a cold trail: warm, but not quick to dry once they are wet. Sizes run XS to 3XL, with waist-by-length sizing on part of the shelf.

Prices are the figures from our last update; we refresh them on a schedule, which is the least glamorous part of the Pioneer Camp way, and the figure at the till is the one that counts.
07Before you order
Which inseam ends where, which trousers zip off into shorts, and which pocket takes a phone without it slapping your leg.
Measure a pair you already like from the crotch seam to the hem and match the number. As a rough map on an average leg: four and five inches sit high on the thigh and are running lengths, seven is the one most people settle on for walking, nine reaches mid-thigh, and fourteen and eighteen reach or pass the knee and read as trousers on a hot street.
The legs unzip at the knee and come off, and what you are left with is a walking short rather than a running one, at the length the zip line sits. The zip is the compromise: it is a seam across the knee you can feel when you kneel, and it is the price of not carrying a second pair on a morning that turns hot.
The cargo trousers, and the answer is the thigh pocket rather than the hip one: a phone in a hip pocket slaps your leg at every step on a descent, and on the thigh it stays put. The card prints the pocket count for each pair and says where they zip, and the pairs with no cargo pocket say so by not printing one.
